Insulating your loft is cheap (especially if you do it yourself) with rolls costing from £25.
For a semi-detached home, going from no insulation to the recommended 270mm would save you £285 a year.
Turn down the heat
The Energy Saving Trust (EST) estimates that, if you only have a single thermostat for an average house, turning it down by one degree will save you £100 a year.
Only heat rooms that you’re using, at a temperature that’s right for you. This works out cheaper than keeping the heating on low all day.
Slash energy use
Switching devices off standby could save you £60 a year, says the EST. Turning off lights saves £25 a year on average.
Check if you can claim money back
If you’re in too much credit, claim the money back or ask your provider to adjust your direct debit.
Sending at least monthly meter readings to your supplier should help keep payments accurate.
